Is it really that easy? Can just walking through a forest or an open meadow be that good for us? Well, it turns out that it can! Sauntering or walking through a forest of trees, taking in the scents and sounds can have a positive effect on our health. There are many benefits to Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku) and anyone with access to a slice of nature can reap the benefits. According to Ming Kuo's research, the experience of Forest Bathing increases counts of our natural killer cells. These killer cells attack cancer and harmful pathogens in our bodies. Kuo's research demonstrates that it also improves the overall function of the immune system and decreases cardiovascular illnesses such as high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. For those who like to dive into research like me, you can read Kuo's research here. Forest Bathing can also increase relaxation and mental clarity. It allows us to be creative, perhaps just feel better overall and to be more present to those we love. Ahhh. Just breathe. No destination in mind. No where to be.
